Vernaccia, Phoenician origin but Latin name
The Vernaccia is the Oristanese wine for excellence, for sure one of most renewed in Sardinia. Spread all a round the Tirso Valley (but Baratili San Pietro is the center of the Vernaccia production), these white grapes were almost certainly introduced by the Phoenician, passing from the landings place of Tharros and Othoca (even if the term came from Latin "vernacula", that means "original of the place").
The Vernaccia has found its ideal climatic conditions in the fertile plains and hills of Arborea and Peninsula of Sinis: in fact, this tendril prefers deep, alluvial and sandy soils.
The wine obtained from the Vernaccia is a D.O.C. (Controlled Origin Denomination), the Vernaccia of Oristano, perfumed, slightly gilded or amber-colored, dessert wine or after dinner ideal to sip while conversing or simply meditating upon life. It is perfect to be tasted eating Sardinian typical sweets, or even to be served simply as an aperitif. It has to be aged at least three to four years but, in favorable environmental conditions, it arrives to 20 or more years of aging. Its grapes are also employed for some Brut and for the P.G.I. (Protected Geographical Indication) Valle del Tirso.
